Dear Professor Cobb, Ladies and gentlemen, goodevening,
It is my honor to be here today.
Giving award was one of the oldest traditions in human history. It recognizes those who contributed to society and encourages others to learn from these outstanding individuals. There are many awards, but when we name an award after someone, it is an honor to remember his/her important contribution. So, today, we offer my sincere congratulations to Prof. Sharon Snowiss, the winner of this year's John Cobb Common Good Award. She has my utmost admiration for promoting the deep dialogue between Chinese and the Western cultures so many years, and at the same time, I also would like to pay sincere tribute to Dr. Cobb, who is the great pioneer and active practitioner of ecological civilization.
Today, I would also like to take this opportunity toshare the latest successful stories of common good from China, so that youcould get a clear and up-to-date understanding of the eco-civilization in China.
The first story is a sharing economy case. Youprobably heard of Mobike by now. It is the largest station-less bicycle sharingplatform in the world. With the aim to solve “the last kilometer” issue, inwhich commuters face the problem of being stuck a bit too far from theirdestination to walk, but too close to justify the cost or delay of finding ataxi, and indirectly to ease the worsened traffic issues for all major citiesin China as well. Mobike’s very innovative approach is to provide a bike withinternet-controlled electronic lock, commuter can use smart phone app to scanthe QR-code to unlock the bike and when finishes by simply locking it to settlethe payment. Each bike has a GPS tracking chip. You can even book a bike viayour mobile phone. The access to these bikes is very convenient and the cost ofusing these bikes extremely affordable to almost everyone, about 12 US centsper half hour. So far, Mobike has attracted billions of dollars fromdomesticand international venture capital. And with its success, other bike sharingplatforms have emerged. So far there are about 20 bike sharing platforms suchas OFO and BLUEGOGO. They all have different approaches but with the commongoal to serve the social demands from Chinese residents.
The second story is a circular economy one. We canalso call it a blue economy case, the company is called Shengqian Energylocated in HEBEI province. I think you must have heard and seen the smogpollution around Beijing.Shengqian Energy’s aim is to reduce the environmentalpollution and provide clean power to local citizens and business. The approachis creating a closed energy loop by using its new technology which is 1)process straw, which is the stalk and leaves from the farming crops, and otherbio-degradable wastes into marsh gas. Then distribute to local household forcooking, heating and other usages. It also provides electricity to factoriesand power generation. 2) The residual from the first step will be the materialfor organic fertilizer. 3) Organic fertilizer will not only fertilize theplants but also improve the quality of the soil. 4)Organic crops willprovide safe food to people and feed theanimals and close the whole circle by giving back straw to the marsh gasstation. It has been supported by the local government and has attracted someof the high-profiled impact investors, and currently is about to sign amultimillion dollar contract with a French investment firm. Due to theconfidential agreement, I would not disclose the names here. The new technologyand innovative business model have turned the local livelihood and businessinto a new ecological civilization. It has created social value and establishednew ecosystem by means of cross-sectoral cooperation.
The third case OpenSource Village is about how to use the concept of open source technologyfor rural and urban development. As we all know, technology has played and willcontinue to play an essential role in the world development. We shall not ignorethis fact when talking about the future civilization. This project is initiatedby a group of hackers, designers and artists who are concerned about socialdevelopment. These makers will go to a community and use Fabrication Lab toproduce all green technology, such as air and water detection system parts, andfarming tools needed in eco-friendly villages. All the designs are shared, andopen to the public. Open source village has two profound meanings: first, it isone of the important principles of eco-civilization; second, under the samespirit, openness will bring diversified, positive and balanced society. Currentlyfive villages are under construction all over China. In the future, YouChangeFoundation will sponsor Open Source Village to organize an ECO-Carnival acrossChina.
These 3 stories are only small samples from manysocial experiments in China. Although they have different approaches andactions but they all aim at same direction, the reflection of mankind’s commondream for the better future----eco-civilization. All these three samplesillustrate three key features of eco-civilization: sharing, cycling andopenness, andthey also showed the consistency of the aim, approach, and action, whichis emphasized by both eastern and western cultures .
Congratulations again to the winner and Prof. Cobb. Ibelieve that more and more experiments will emerge in China and in the rest ofthe world, inspired by what we discussed here at Clarement.
Thank you!
